KOLEJ HOSTIVAR OR FLAT?

I spent 6 months in Kolej Hostivar. Then, I moved out, and now, I'm living in a flat in Zizkov.(I wanted to try the life in a flat) I REALLY RECOMMEND to go to Kolej Hostivar. There, you can meet many people and friends, and then, if you are fed up of living there, move out from there. But at the beginning of your Erasmus, go to Hostivar. What most of the people did was spending the 1st semester there and then in January-February, after the new people came, they moved out. Well, always you can spend the whole year in the dormitory.
-------------
Tot hi així, sempre podeu quedar-vos tot l'any a Hosti.

  2. Hi Mery Way,
I will most likely be staying at this dorm for my Erasms stay of 2014/15. I will be going on exchange with my boyfriend and I am guessig the university would not allow us to share the same room. Would you have some idea? Thank you in advance!

    1. Hey Jojo! Thanks for your message!
If I'm not wrong, you can definitely share the room with your boyfriend! When I applied for the dormitory, I received an email saying this(among other things, for sure): "we only have double rooms in our dormitories (if you are coming together with a friend/schoolmate of yours, you are welcome to share a room – just let us know your names)".

I attach you Ivana Herglova's email address(I think she's the coordinator of the Erasmus students), write her and I think she will organize this for you:-)

      Hope this helps ;-)

    2. PS: I had two friends (a boy and a girl) who asked her and they didn't have any problems. Maybe it would be better if you don't say he's your boyfriend but a good friend of yours or something like that. Just in case, sometimes Czech people can be very weird haha

  3. Hi Mery Way, i'd like to do you some questions. First of all ..sorry if my English is not very good but i hope you can understand me :) so i want know how is the zone in which the dormitory is located.. is it quiet, well served (shops..)? I know that the dormitory is 30 minutes far from the centre..but is difficult to arrive at the centre or are there very often bus or tram? At last if i want take a flat can i leave the dormitory? if yes, after a certain period (for exampe for 2 months compulsorily) or when i want? thank you for your help :)

  4. Hey Martina! Thanks for your comment :-) Let's see:
The dormitory is located 30-45 minutes away from the center (by tram or bus-metro) but if you take the train, it will take you just 15 minutes. There are supermarkets like ALBERT, TESCO or SPAR. The ALBERT is the closest one and you can go on foot, if you wanna go to the other two, you will need to take the tram or the bus. The good thing of these last two supermarkets is that, they are located in a shopping center. So, you will find other facilities. You may find the timetables of the bus and tram in:
http://www.dpp.cz/ and here, the train: www.idos.cz (but the timetables are hung in the dormitory's lobby).
If I'm not wrong there's a minimum of 1 or 2 months(dunno sure) but if you wanna leave the dormitory you will have to pay a penalty charge which is the deposit you will give them the first day of your stay(or at least a part of it). But of course you are free to leave the residence whenever you wanna(I did it ;) )!

I hope this link works and you can see where are the supermarkets located:

  6. Hello,

I'll go to Prague next winter semester to the Charles University and I'm looking to a room in a flat to share with other erasmus students, because I study violin and I have to have my only room to do it, because I don't want to disturb anyone. But, it has been a hard task to find a good one.
Do you know if Hostivar has study rooms or something else? I know that the bedrooms are double, so I can't study there :/

    Thanks a lot!

What rooms does kolej Hostivar has for married students with children? Are those rooms bigger than ordinary double rooms?

I am afraid I have no idea if the rooms are bigger than the ordinary ones. But if I'm not wrong, there are rooms for couples and children. When I was there I saw some families who were staying there.
Sorry that I can't give you an exact answer.

  8. Hi

Im considering staying at Hostivar during my Erasmus in Prague, but do you know their rules about visitors? Because I have a Boyfriend in Denmark, and he will most likely come and visit a couple of times :) Is that aloud?

    Really good blog, btw!

    Have a nice day, Kamma

    1. Hey Kamma! thanks :_)
There are rules but when I was there no one followed them. Let's see, I think ,during the day, visitors can get to the dormitory freely but the problem comes at night. Just students can get in because the main doors are opened with a student card. I have to say that the people who are in the reception don't give a shit with whom you are coming. Moreover, they do not know all the students and that's an advantage. The thing is that if you tell them you have a visitor, your boyyfriend will have to pay the nights he is gonna staying (or this is how it worked when i was there, maybe it has changed).
I recommend you not to worry so much about it, I think it will be easy for you and your boyfriend to spend nights in the dormitory without any problem. No one checks on you!!
      Hope that helps :-)
      Have a nice day too!
Let me know if you have some other questions ;-)

    1. Hi Moniek,
You are right, Hostivar is a little bit far away from the center. actually 45 minutes by tram or bus. Nevertheless, there is a train station, and it takes just 15 minutes from Hostivar to the city.

As far as I know, there are other dormitories. Some are just for czech students but there are others where international students are admitted. You can check that if you wanna. ;)

Otherwise, you rent a room in a shared-flat. check my blog I posted some flat webpages!
      hope that helps!

And one more: any transporting at late nights from city center to dorm?

    1. Hello Tuna, thanks for your message!!

The bathroom takes part of the bedroom. So you'll have a bedroom (shared with a roomate) with a bathroom. When you come for the first time, it is supposed to be cleaned. So about the hygiene, it is fine. Once you've moved in, you are the one responsible to clean the bathroom and the bedroom. In the basement there is the "Laundry" where you can put your dirty sheets. And if you ever need a vacuum cleaner, you can ask to the reception!;-)

      hope that helps,
if you have more questions, do not hesitate to contact me!

    2. PS. ja about the transport. Of course there are night trams ! now i can't remember the numbers but if you go the the "transport" section, you might find some information! but no worries, there are night trams that are going to bring you to the dormitory :-)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hey Ann,
Indeed, you have to make a reservation paying a fee before you come. KoleJ Hostivar is one of the charles univeristy hall of residence. That's what they wrote me when I went there:

      1. On the basis of positive receipt of a request for accommodation at the Charles University halls of residence within the terms of LLP/Erasmus exchange programme, the applicant is required to pay a so-called accommodation reservation fee. Reservation validity is conditional on payment of an accountable deposit in the value of CZK 1,800 by 05/08/2011 inclusive.

      2. The deposit according to paragraph 1 forms funds for payment of the last month of accommodation. The deposit is accountable on the basis of the director’s rules titled “Principles of accommodation at the Charles University halls of residence during the 2011/2012 academic year.”

      HOPE THAT HELPS ;)

But should we pay deposit and monthly fee through this web page rehos.cuni.cz? Because it's all in Czech, I have no idea what I'm reading there xD. Do they have some bank account or it's juts that page for reservation.

As you perfectly said, before going to Prague, you should do a transfer and pay a part of the rent but once you are there you gonna pay in cash at the reception (every month).

      Hope that helps!

  17. Hi Mary Way! Just for your information, Kolej Hostivař has obtained a POS terminal already since last year, so anyone wishing to pay with a card can be assisted. I was staying there for almost 2 years for my Master's studies and I have to say they have improved quite a lot. Certain staff members in the reception still seem a bit unwelcoming, but overall their behavior is alright and during office hours Tomáš Vitiš, and English a speaking staff member, is there to answer your questions. The only insecurity is regardig food in the fridges on each floor. Better use locks and have one fridge shared between half of the rooms on the floor after getting to know the residents, at least briefly. Usually stealing happens inter-floor which is actually very bad, but there is nothing the dorm staff can do about it. The fridges have padlocks though. Another thing is responsibility for cleanliness. The cleaning ladies do a good job but they need their weekends too. During that time, you see no one changing the plastic bags (even if they get ripped) and the kitchen can be left dirty by some, something which is disgusting, considering that many students believe that maintaining a decently clean environment "is not their job," as if others are born to be cleaners in life while they themselves are born to be studying only. My point is: go to stay in Kolej Hostivař, but please do not forget about the responsibilities that you have. Get to know the people there and build a nice in-dorm community of cooperation, understanding and... partying, guys, definitely partying!

  18. Sorry, I meant "an English a speaking staff member" regarding Tomáš Vitiš. The dormitory has also invested in renovations and maintenance of the building here and there, and that's another reason I appreciate the administration for. You actually see your money going somewhere. :-) Accommodation in the dorm is definitely cheaper that a room in an average flat in Prague (and you won't feel like you're being ripped off) and there is a train passing by every half an hour taking you to the main train station in 15-minute trip, which is quite convenient (esp. on weekends, when the trams' interval can be as long as 10-15 minutes) and you won't be feeling too isolated from the center. Stops of night trams and night buses are also nearby. Bus #911 can take you right from the center (near Palladium shopping mall) to a stop almost in front of the dorm, so it's safe.

  20. Hi! First of all thank you for your blog, it's very useful and you are very clear (your English is sooo good!!). I have some questions. I'll go in Prague for the summer semester and I'll stay in one of CU's dorms. 1- Did you have the fridge in your bedroom? 2- Does every room of the Hostivar Kolej have a bathroom or some rooms don't have it? (in this case, is the bathroom located on the corridor?) 3- How much was the rent? How much did you pay for staying in Hostivar? 4- It's the last question, I promise ahah is it possible to live in Praga as an Erasmus student with a low budget (10.000 czk, 12.000 czk maximum)?

    1. Hey, thanks for the comment :-)!
      Regarding your questions:
      1) No, we didn't have a fridge in our bedrooms but in our corridor. There were two fridges for eight people (4 one fridege, and 4 the other).
      2) All the bedrooms have a bathroom :-)
      3) I cannot remember very well how much I paid, and of course, it might have changed. But I think I paid no more than 250 euros. I think it was 200 something, but I cannot remember.Or even less, but it is cheap.

4)12,000 czk are something like 460 euros.. I mean if you control how much you spend, I guess you can. But I would say that you need a little bit more. Think, you spend 200 euros for the rent. You have 260 left. You need to buy the ticket transport that is 30 euros (for 3 months). You have 230 (depites the following two months you don't have t pay it). You need to buy groceries and of course, you will go out with your new friends. I guess you can make it but I think it is gonna be a little bit tight.

Hope that helps, do not hesitate to contact me again for further information :-)

Have a nice stay in Prague!

Ask at the university. I think they will give you a better answer. It's been like 5 years since my erasmus and things might have changed ;-)

There is no duvet but you are provided with sheets and a blanket. You can changed them every week or every two weeks at the basement where there is a kind of a laundry.

Regarding the kitchen utensils: depends. If the previous students have left kitchen utensils, you won't have to buy them. Otherwise, I think you'll have to buy them. But you can talk with your roomate/ corridor mates and buy it together ^^
